The Weakest link in traceability
Déc 08, 2005
Gregory S. Bennet of Iowa State University has been researching Cost - Benefit Analysis of Identity Preservation: A Case Study of Low Linolenic Soybeans Grown on Iowa Farms. He recommends that farmers need to be included in modern traceability and it can be profitable for them to participate in identity preservation systems. At the present time both seed companies and processors have well established traceability or identity preservation programs, he reports. However, the weak link in our food system is at the farmer-cooperative level in his view. His research helps to identify how we can strengthen the farmer link in the system. He finds that seed companies and farmers' involvement with value-added, traceability, and identity preservation that can benefit consumers, manufacturers, exports, and overall food security is a relatively ignored topic.
