2D Experimental Pilot Line to Test Graphene-Based Sensors

The 2D Experimental Pilot Line has launched its first customisable wafer run. As one of five multi-project wafer runs, this first phase targets sensor applications. Companies, universities and research institutes can include their designs as dies on joint wafers, to test their ideas for devices on a larger scale at relatively low costs.

MICLEDI

MICLEDI develops microLED microdisplays for the augmented reality (AR) market, which are intended for integration with waveguide optics. The imec spin-out's displays are designed on a 300mm wafer platform for CMOS manufacturing compatibility. The fabless Leuven-based firm has demonstrated first display prototypes and just announced GlobalFoundries is its fab partner.

ST Microelectronics

ST Microelectronics is a well-established manufacturer of semiconducting components, including image sensors and MEMS devices. It recently announced a short-wave infrared (SWIR) sensor based on quantum dots capable of detecting light at 1400nm, promising lower costs than the incumbent InGaAs technology.

Deep Optics

Deep Optics is an Israeli company which designs flat, dynamic liquid crystal lenses for human vision-related applications. Its first product is adaptive diopter sunglasses for the correction of presbyopia, released under its consumer-facing brand 32°N. Future target uses of this technology include augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) headsets, where the lenses could adjust for prescriptions and solve the vergence-accommodation conflict.

Fast and Reliable COVID-19 Diagnosis Based on Exhaled Breath

Imec and miDiagnostics in collaboration with Johns Hopkins University specialized in the development of point-of-care tests for screening, diagnosing and monitoring a wide range of health conditions, announce that they have signed a non-exclusive licensing agreement for imec's patented technology whereby aerosols and droplets from exhaled breath are captured for screening for viral RNA through miDiagnostics ultrafast PCR technology.

Advanced Neurostimulation Device For Pelvic Nerve Disorders

Imec announces a collaboration to develop a next-generation implantable device for peripheral nerve stimulation together with NeuroGyn AG, a Swiss medtech company specialized in neurostimulaton and surgical solutions for pelvic nerve disorders.

The Most Complex Flexible Microprocessor Yet

The low-cost chip carries over 12 times as many transistors as previous flexible microprocessors, and is ultra-thin and flexible with good performance. The team made the chip from metal-oxide transistors using conventional manufacturing equipment.

18.6% Efficiency Near Infrared Transparent Perovskite Solar Cell

Researchers have realized a 18.6% efficient highly near infrared transparent perovskite solar cell. When combined in a four terminal tandem configuration with an efficient Panasonic crystalline silicon (c-Si) cell or with a Miasolé flexible CIGS cell, delivers new record power conversion efficiencies of 28.7% and 27.0%, respectively.

Terahertz Imaging of Graphene Paves the Way to Industrialisation
