a ramp up phase through power quality applications like UPS, then in full scale with the transport and industrial sector. This means they are realistic about the development time for their product to be accepted in the transport sector for example. The company seems to know well, where high power supercapacitor applications can be drive growth. On Mr. Madiberk words:"Although the market is growing at a 30% rate, additional growth has been stalled by the lack of high energy and power densities needed by high-performance applications" The company recently procured funding for an additional investment round.

Development avenues for electrolyte and separator systems

Supercapacitors have seen tremendous improvements over the past decade, resulting in higher power density, higher energy density and lower prices. Electrodes have seen the most amount of attention, effort and development. In this article however, we focus instead on electrolytes and separators. Directions in electrolyte research are towards high voltage, more stable and greener solutions. Similarly, separators need to improve purity and high voltage stability. This is particularly true if paper separators are to succeed. We will discuss these developments in this article.

New Supercapacitor Advances in Japan

Supercapacitor sales are mostly about automotive, with Chinese buses being the main destination of Ioxus and Maxwell supercapacitors and Japanese cars the main users of Nippon ChemiCon supercapacitors. French cars are the main users of Batscap supercapacitors and so on. IDTechEx analysts regularly visit many supercapacitor and lithium-ion capacitor (supercabattery) manufacturers and users in Japan the center of the global EV industry, with Toyota the leader by a large margin. Here are some of the findings.

Review of supercapacitors in 2014 and the outlook for 2015

Whilst the industry has reduced its growth in comparison to the previous years (from an estimated 30% in 2014 vs 2013 to 15% in 2014 vs 2013), IDTechEx believes that this is just a temporary stagnation. Indeed, the fact that other companies are investing in manufacturing capacity and challenging the leadership of Maxwell Technologies is a positive sign for the industry and a good signal for the supercapacitor market, which by definition needs more than one major player. We believe that more manufacturer options across the globe will provide the required alternative supply that end user industries are requiring in order to warranty market competition. This article gives an overview of the major events and developments in 2014 and gives the IDTechEx outlook for 2015.
