Presentation Summary

• Objective
This presentation will demonstrate the advantages and viability of supercapacitor-based energy storage as a safe, efficient and effective alternative to chemical batteries. Included in the presentation will be several case-studies demonstrating the broad applicability of this
transformative technology.
• Background/Introduction
As storage media, supercapacitors have many positive attributes including:
o High DC to DC round-trip efficiency (>99% @25⁰C)
o Long cycle and calendar life
o Supercap cell cycle life and capacity are unaffected by high C-rates
o Wide operating temperature range: -30⁰C to 85 ⁰C*
o They generate little or no heat during charge or discharge cycles*
o They can be fully utilized e.g. 100% depth of discharge (DOD)
o They have no thermal runaway risk.
*performance may vary at different temperatures and at different C-rates.
Despite these many advantages, supercapacitors have limitations that have restricted their use to power applications that require fast charge and discharge. These limitations include:
o Unstable when connected in series;
o Linear discharge rate;
o High leakage current;
o And low specific energy
Recent advances in technology have addressed the first three limitations while advances in materials technology have addressed the specific energy limitation, allowing for the development of the world's first supercapacitor-based storage solution that is a viable alternative to chemical batteries in most applications.
• Results
As stated above, these advances in technology have resulted in the world's first supercapacitor based energy storage system that is a viable alternative to chemical batteries in most applications. My presentation will present technical metrics of this new technology and discuss its broad applicability across industries and use cases including, but not limited to:
o Cell Tower Storage
o Solar + Storage
o Genset + Storage
o Microgrids
o Solar Street Lights
• Conclusion
Advances in technology and commercialization of this new product helps unlock the potential of a sustainable energy future—safely, economically, and efficiently.
