Founded in 1998, the BMW Group Technology Office USA is located in Mountain View, California and currently employs a diverse team from multidisciplinary fields.
The office reflects the spirit of technological innovation embodied by its Silicon Valley setting, bringing together associates to work towards one common goal: the identification of new technologies and trends relevant to BMW, and their incorporation into new products as quickly as possible.
The Mountain View team works to ensure that BMW remains at the forefront of global trends and technology. The researchers and developers concentrate preliminary on Sustainability and Digitalization. That includes but isn't limited to future mobility concepts, smart grid and smart home, battery technology and powertrain topics, as well as sensor technologies, Big Data and machine learning, user experience concepts and highly automated driving.
The offices are easily accessible via the Bay Shore Freeway and are less than a mile from the water and green spaces of Shoreline Park.

Two forthcoming events in Germany reflect the intense interest in energy harvesting for electric vehicles. Energy Harvesting Europe 21-22 June covers many forms of harvesting for other applications as well and drills into the technology, investment and other aspects of harvesting in general. On the other hand Electric Vehicles Land Sea Air in Stuttgart 28-29 June is entirely vehicle oriented.

Lithium polymer traction batteries, good or bad?

A large and increasing number of traction battery manufacturers are now offering what they call lithium polymer (LiPo) versions. Lithium polymer batteries are being eagerly adopted in a rapidly widening variety of applications. That includes in both pure electric and hybrid vehicles whether on land, in water or in the air. Battery manufacturers in Canada, the USA, Russia, China, Korea, Taiwan and elsewhere are involved.

Spike in electric vehicle sales predicted in major cities

Recent research conducted by a global management consulting firm predicts a sharp rise in electric vehicle purchases leading into 2012, expecting sales in New York to account for 16 percent of new buys. Hybrid and pure electric vehicles are also expected to account for 9 percent of new vehicles in Paris and 5 percent in Shanghai.
