Ultra lightweight motors for electric drones and airliners
Newcastle University in the UK was chosen by Boeing to develop an ultra-lightweight electric motor for an upper atmosphere electric aircraft. These spidery fixed-wing aircraft can have the wingspan of a jumbo jet but the weight of a small car.

Wearable, automotive and IoT drive sensor growth at IDTechEx Show!
The last decade has seen the cost of sensors fall to an average sales price of 50 cents from several dollars, driven first by the increase in sensors for automotive followed by consumer electronics such as smart phones. The next phase of volume growth will be driven by wearable technology, IoT and driver assisted/autonomous vehicles. This is also driving work on new types of sensors, such as flexible, larger area ones.

Fabrisonic is a small technology-focussed business which has developed Ultrasonic Additive Manufacturing (UAM) technology. It uses sound waves to merge 150-200 micron layers of metal foil without melting. A succession of metal tapes is built into a three-dimensional shape, with periodic machining operations to create the detailed shape.
