The University of Missouri-Columbia (MU) is the flagship campus of the University of Missouri system and was established in 1839 as the first public university west of the Mississippi River. MU is one of the nation's top-tier R1 institutions by US News and a RU/VH (research university with very high research activity) by Carnegie Foundation. It is also a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), composed of 62 leading research-intensive universities in the North America. MU is one of only six public universities in the US with medicine, veterinary medicine, and law all on one campus.
