Presentation Summary

  • Developing wireless nanodevices and nanosystems is of critical importance for sensing, medical science, environmental/infrastructure monitoring, and even personal electronics.
  • It is desirable for wireless devices to be self-powered without using a battery.
  • It is essential to explore innovative nanotechnologies for converting mechanical energy, vibration energy, and hydraulic energy into electric energy that will be used to power nanodevices.
  • An innovative approach for converting nano-scale mechanical energy into electric energy by piezoelectric zinc oxide nanowire arrays

Speaker Biography (Jinhui Song)

Dr. Jinhui Song is a postdoctoral resesarcher in Professor Z.L. Wang's group, School of Materials Science and Engineering, at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He received his B.S. degree (1998) from the School of Physics, Nankai University, China; his M.S. (2003) degree in Physics from Georgia Institute of Technology; and his Ph.D (2008) degree in School of Materials Science and Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. He and his Ph.D advisor co-invented the nanogenerator (published in Science 14 April 2006: 242-246), which received worldwide news coverage. Following work on an ultrasonic wave driven nanogenerator (published in Science, 316 (2007) 102-105) also received considerable media attention. Since 2005, Dr. Song has received a number of awards: KAUST Global Research Partnership (GRP) Research Fellows Since 2009, the 2007 MRS Graduate Student Silver Reward, 2006 Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-financed Students Abroad, 2006 School of Materials Science and Engineering Research Initiation Award, 2005 School of Materials Science and Engineering Advanced Publication Award and Research Initiation Award. He is the author or co-author of more than 30 journal articles and 3 US patents. The total citations of his paper is over 1,800 times till July, 2010.
