NEVI Status in the US

The National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program is in its fourth year, with 15 states deploying 506 charging ports and over 2,800 additional ports conditionally awarded as of February 2025. These stations have supported thousands of electric vehicle (EV) charging sessions, but progress remains slow compared to initial targets. An estimated 1,000-1,500 stations (4,000-6,000 ports) are still needed to complete the Alternative Fuel Corridor network. NEVI contributed less than 1% of public chargers installed in 2024, highlighting its role as a catalyst rather than a standalone solution. A recent Trump administration memo paused new NEVI funding allocations, though existing state projects with finalized agreements continue unaffected. Several states are continuing their work to build out NEVI-funded EV chargers, but the move has undoubtedly led to market disruption and uncertainty. This premium article highlights the status of NEVI funding and charger rollout in the US as of February 2025.

Beyond the Plug: Wireless, Swapping, and Off-Grid EV Charging

As EV adoption accelerates, charging infrastructure faces growing challenges in cost, power availability, installation time, and scalability. Traditional cable-based charging struggles with slow deployment, prompting interest in alternative solutions like battery swapping, wireless charging, and off-grid charging. Battery swapping enables rapid EV recharging, supports Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) models, and enhances fleet efficiency but faces hurdles in high infrastructure costs and standardization. Wireless charging offers seamless, plug-free energy transfer, benefiting public transit and autonomous fleets, yet struggles with high costs, efficiency losses, and vehicle alignment precision. Off-grid charging solutions—such as solar canopies, hydrogen generators, and wind-based systems—promise renewable energy independence but remain constrained by cost, efficiency, and infrastructure limitations. Each approach presents unique advantages and trade-offs, requiring further cost reductions, technological advancements, and policy support to complement and compete with traditional grid-tied charging solutions.
