Discovery of the One-Way Superconductor, Thought to be Impossible
Researchers have discovered one-way superconductivity without magnetic fields, something that was thought to be impossible ever since its discovery in 1911 - up till now. The discovery makes use of 2D quantum materials and paves the way towards superconducting computing. Superconductors can make electronics hundreds of times faster, all with zero energy loss.

Bacterial Soundtracks Revealed by Graphene Membrane
Have you ever wondered if bacteria make distinctive sounds? If we could listen to bacteria, we would be able to know whether they are alive or not. When bacteria are killed using an antibiotic, those sounds would stop - unless of course the bacteria are resistant to the antibiotic. This is exactly what a team of researchers have managed to do: they captured low-level noise of a single bacterium using graphene.

Swarm of Autonomous Tiny Drones Can Localize Gas Leaks
When there is a gas leak in a large building or at an industrial site, human firefighters currently need to go in with gas sensing instruments. Finding the gas leak may take considerable time, while they are risking their lives. Researchers have now developed the first swarm of tiny - and hence very safe - drones that can autonomously detect and localize gas sources in cluttered indoor environments.

3D Printed Algae has Applications in Energy, Medicine, Fashion, Space
Researchers use 3D printing to create a novel, environmentally friendly material made of algae that has applications not only for energy and medicine, but also for fashion and space exploration.
Living materials, which are made by housing biological cells within a nonliving matrix, have gained popularity in recent years as scientists recognize that often the most robust materials are those that mimic nature.

Lithium Metal Battery with a Protective Layer
Researchers have taken an important step towards a new type of Li-ion battery, which can be found in our smartphones, laptops and electric cars, among other things. For the first time, they succeeded in making an electrolyte that goes well with an anode made of lithium metal. Lithium metal is the holy grail for anodes. In theory, a two to three times higher energy density can be achieved with this material compared to current batteries.
