Presentation Summary

In this presentation I will present an overview of the field of intelligent textiles based on my own experience and research towards making smart textiles within various Swiss and EU projects (TechInTex, Place-it...). I will explain important insights from industry and future directions and discuss opportunities where intelligent textiles can have an added value for the design of comfortable products that meet a number of important societal trends.

Speaker Biography (Koen van Os)

Research Interest:
Intelligent Textiles in the area of Light and Health

Working Experience:
Product development, industrialization of electronic textiles, microelectronic assembly, LED technologies, SMD electronics, factory improvement, project management, textile inkjet printing and precision engineering.

Mr. Koen van Os received his master in precision engineering in 1995 from Eindhoven University of Technology. After his graduation he fulfilled positions at Stork Digital Imaging and joined Philips in 2001. Here he started as technologist in the field of electronic interconnection technologies. Later he was engineering manager at Philips Lumalive for developing LED textiles in wearable applications. Since 2010 he explores electronic textiles at Philips Research. He is responsible for product and process developments with a strong focus on industrialization by bridging the gap between electronic and textile industries and is project coordinator of PLACE-it. The PLACE-it project investigates Large Area Conformable Electronics by InTegration. Three different basic technologies are compared and combined in order to bring forward different demonstrators. The demonstrators are all opto-electronics: integration of modern light sources like flexible OLED and SMD LEDs. We will demonstrate added value of these technologies in a broad domain: from health care to automotive. The project started in 2010 en will be finished half 2013.
