International Standards Development as a Path to Commercialization (Printed Electronics USA 2015)

Regulations, Standards, Codes, and technical specifications supporting certification and testing for safety, performance and sustainability are of paramount importance for market penetration and product longevity in the targeted markets. Several factors are at play in leading or exceeding the requirements for commercialization and market acceptance. These factors include regulatory compliance, standardization for safety, third party testing, certification, validation, and risk assessment.

Stephen has over 30 years of experience in Technologies . Throughout that period, he has been responsible for standards development, product planning and management, regulatory affairs, international business development, and strategic planning.

In 2012, Stephen was appointed to a new role at CSA Group with a global mandate regarding Emerging Technologies and their "game changing" effects on safety, certification, standards, and international applicability for specific markets. This area includes Smart Grid and Interoperability, Nanotechnologies, Energy Storage, Alternative Energy Vehicles (new/enhanced propulsion systems) and infrastructure.

By identifying new and emerging technologies, Stephen currently leads cross functional global teams to assess and determine potential opportunities through the deployment of market intelligence, insights and business perspectives.

In 2011, Stephen directed the CSA Group input and contributions that were essential in developing the smart grid roadmap for Canada and requirements for North American harmonization.

In 2010, Stephen assumed responsibility for the development of standards for Alternative Energy vehicles in the US and Canada covering fuel cells, electric, hydrogen, Compressed Natural Gas and Liquid Natural Gas.

In 2006, Stephen expanded his role by establishing the standards portfolio for Renewable Energy technology including wind, geothermal, solar thermal, PV, and marine energy.

In 2004, Stephen transitioned to Director, Electrotechnical codes and standards. In this role, he was responsible for more than 2000 standards that are deployed within Canada including over 1000 ICT Standards.

In 2002, Stephen joined the CSA Group as a Director. His initial mandate was to develop the External Affairs function with responsibility for strategic marketing, coordinate business planning and develop external stakeholder relations.

Stephen is married, has two adult children and 4 grandchildren along with 3 cats, and a horse, is an avid reader of 14th-17th century European and Russian history and is a very mediocre golfer
