Smart packaging for retail items is packaging which goes beyond the basic function of passively containing and protecting the product by adding useful functionality with real benefits for the consumer. Displays are a tool in the marketing toolkit to improve merchandising and sales. There is value in displays when the payback in sales justifies the cost and additional manufacturing steps, although this is seldom the case. Due to prohibitive costs of displays, usually it is only used on luxury goods or in limited edition campaigns. On the other hand, great value has been demonstrated for the electronic shelf labels that use e-paper, a market that is expected to continue to grow.
