Cybersecurity Tools to Protect Solar, Wind Power on the Grid
Solar panels and wind turbines, now projected to produce 44% of America's electricity by 2050, present cybersecurity challenges. They have sensors, controllers, actuators or inverters that are directly or indirectly connected to the internet. They're distributed far and wide across the country and the countryside. Many have insecure connectivity to legacy electric grid systems. They have complex physics. They're subject to advanced persistent threats. And there will be more and more of them going online.

Automating Renal Access in Kidney Stone Surgery Using AI Enabled Robot
Percutaneous nephrolithotomy is an efficient, minimally-invasive, gold standard procedure used for removing large kidney stones. Creating an access from the skin on the back to the kidney—called renal access, is a crucial yet challenging step in percutaneous nephrolithotomy. A research team questioned if artificial intelligence-powered robotic devices could be used for improved guidance compared with conventional US guidance. Specifically, they wanted to see if the AI-powered device offers better precision in percutaneous renal access along with automated needle trajectory.

New Material for Remote-Controlled Medication and Electronic Pills
Biomedicines are produced by living cells and are used to treat cancer and autoimmune diseases among other things. One challenge is that the medicines are very expensive to produce, something that limits global access. Now researchers have invented a material that uses electrical signals to capture and release biomolecules. The new and efficient method may have a major impact in the development of biomedicines and pave the way for the development of electronic pills and drug implants.

Single-Step, All-In-One 3D Printing Method to Make Robotic Materials
A team of engineers and their colleagues have developed a new design strategy and 3D printing technique to build robots in one single step. The breakthrough enabled the entire mechanical and electronic systems needed to operate a robot to be manufactured all at once by a new type of 3D printing process for engineered active materials with multiple functions (also known as metamaterials). Once 3D printed, a "meta-bot" will be capable of propulsion, movement, sensing and decision-making.
