Automating Renal Access in Kidney Stone Surgery Using AI Enabled Robot

Percutaneous nephrolithotomy is an efficient, minimally-invasive, gold standard procedure used for removing large kidney stones. Creating an access from the skin on the back to the kidney—called renal access, is a crucial yet challenging step in percutaneous nephrolithotomy. A research team questioned if artificial intelligence-powered robotic devices could be used for improved guidance compared with conventional US guidance. Single-Step, All-In-One 3D Printing Method to Make Robotic Materials

A team of engineers and their colleagues have developed a new design strategy and 3D printing technique to build robots in one single step. The breakthrough enabled the entire mechanical and electronic systems needed to operate a robot to be manufactured all at once by a new type of 3D printing process for engineered active materials with multiple functions (also known as metamaterials).
