In the Future Your Entire Car Could Be a Radar Antenna, Says IDTechEx
Radar miniaturization is one of the key trends that IDTechEx has identified in "Automotive Radar 2022-2042". There are several factors that are contributing towards this, such as moving from 24GHz to 77GHz which shrinks the antenna size. Or, transitioning from SiGe-BiCMOS based transceivers to Si-CMOS ones, which reduces the number of discrete computational components and shrinks the circuit board. So, with the size continuing to come down, IDTechEx asks, how small can it get?

World's Largest 3D Printed Logistics Vessel
Researchers have achieved a groundbreaking milestone in composite manufacturing with the production of two 3D-printed prototype logistics vessels for the US Department of Defense. The longer of the two vessels, the largest ever 3D-printed, simulates ship-to-shore movement of 20-foot containers representing equipment and supplies. The second vessel can transport a Marine rifle-squad with organic equipment and three days of supplies.

Graphene Sensor Rapidly Detects Opioid Metabolites in Wastewater
The unique properties of the atom-thick sheet of carbon, known as graphene, enabled a new penny-sized, multiplexed bio-sensor that's the first to detect opioid byproducts in wastewater. The novel device is the first to use graphene-based field effect transistors to detect four different synthetic and natural opioids at once, while shielding them from wastewater's harsh elements.

Fingertip Sensitivity for Robots
The thumb-shaped sensor is made of a soft shell built around a lightweight stiff skeleton. This skeleton holds up the structure much like bones stabilize the soft finger tissue. The shell is made from an elastomer mixed with dark but reflective aluminum flakes, resulting in an opaque greyish color which prevents any external light finding its way in. Hidden inside this finger-sized cap is a tiny 160-degree fish-eye camera which records colorful images illuminated by a ring of LEDs.

Squid Skin Inspires UV Radiation Sensing Wearable
The researchers expect that people will use this device to monitor sun exposure, but the sensor also could be used in other situations where there's utility to measuring light exposure. For example, UV radiation is often used to sterilize environments. These stickers could be used to indicate when a surface has been exposed to UV radiation for long enough to be fully sterilized.
