In June 2014, STMicroelectronics began limited production of its EnFilm™ rechargeable thin-film lithium batteries. These batteries are ultra-thin (low-capacity with mm thickness) and were developed using technology licensed from Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

USound MEMS Speakers

USound GmbH is an Austrian company developing piezoelectric MEMS speakers, where it uses a mechanical decoupling of the piezoelectric motor and the silicon diaphragm to achieve greater sound pressure levels (SPLs) at low frequencies, a key challenge with MEMS speakers.

SonicEdge: Electrostatic MEMS Speakers

SonicEdge is an Israeli-Danish MEMS speaker company developing ultrasonic amplitude modulation-based MEMS speakers for consumer devices. Founded in 2019, it focuses on replacing traditional voice coil speakers with silicon-chip solutions for applications such as TWS earbuds and AR/VR headsets. Many MEMS speaker companies are using piezoelectric transduction, but Sonic Edge has opted for an all-silicon electrostatic approach. IDTechEx spoke to Sonic Edge to discuss its product offering and core technology in depth.
