Until recently, most M2M and Internet of Things (IoT) applications have relied on high-speed cellular and wired networks for their wide area connectivity. Today, there are a number of IoT applications that will continue to require higher-bandwidth, however others may be better suited for low-power wide-area (LPWA) options that not only compliment traditional cellular networks, but also unlock new market potential by reducing costs and increasing the flexibility of solution deployments. With LPWA, many alternatives have emerged - some fall under the 3GPP standard and use licensed spectrum such as LTE Cat-M1 and NB-IoT, while other alternatives such as LoRaWAN™ are based on non-3GPP standards and use unlicensed ISM spectrum. IoT certainly has its challenges - from choosing the right device, to adding connectivity and then managing those devices and the data they generate. One thing is certain and that is technology is continuously evolving and changes are on the horizon. Speaker Biography (Michael Finegan)
Michael Finegan is the Director of IoT Business Development for MultiTech. He specializes in designing wireless and wire line WAN (wide area network) topologies and implementing M2M and IoT solutions. Michael has over nineteen years of experience and has a passion for leading technical design, engineering and commercialization of embedded systems for the "Internet of Things". Formerly, Michael was a Sales Engineering Executive at Sprint. He was a founding member of Sprint's Emerging Solutions Group (ESG). He spearheaded an entrepreneurial division to identify and seek out high-value retail and wholesale M2M and embedded systems solutions across all channels and all markets. Michael successfully launched the world's first M2M Collaboration Center. Michael graduated from Saint Mary's College in California with a degree in Business Administration and Management.
