Speaker Biography (Kaj Nummila)Kaj Nummila was born in 1960 in Salo, Finland. He attained a Doctor degree from the Helsinki University of Technology (HUT) in 1989. At the Low Temperature Laboratory (LTL) of HUT he conducted research on quantum phenomena of rotating superfluid 3He liquid and on nuclear magnetism at both positive and negative absolute ultralow temperatures. In 1992-94 he headed a group of EU scientists at the Hahn-Meitner institute in Berlin to study nuclear magnetic ordering in silver at picokelvin temperatures using neutron diffraction techniques. In 1995-97 Dr. Nummila acted as a manager of the nuclear magnetism research group at LTL. During this time a completely new nuclear demagnetization cryostat was designed and constructed which still holds the low temperature world record obtained in studies of nuclear magnetism in rhodium. Dr. Nummila has a docent degree at HUT in physics since 1996. After joining VTT, Technical Research Centre of Finland in 1998 he has worked as a senior research scientist and as a group manager mainly developing electromagnetic, rf- and microwave sensors for industrial use. During the last six years he has been developing radiofrequency identification (RFID) systems and wireless sensors as a head of the Wireless Sensing team at VTT. He also acts as a Customer Manager in the field of Electronics at VTT. Dr. Nummila is a board member of the RFID LAB Finland, has participated in developing EU research strategies for future RFID and IoT research, and heads a mirror group on RFID and Automatic Identification at the Finnish Standards Association. He has authored and co-authored over 50 peer-reviewed journal and conference articles, and he is a co-inventor in several patent applications.
