Introduction

The RFID Knowledgebase is a unique tool researched and maintained wholly by IDTechEx, which offers the world's largest collection of searchable RFID case studies. In July 2005, there were over 1,500 RFID case studies expected to grow to 2,000 by the end of the year. This report contains sample case studies which gives you a glimpse into the IDTechEx knowledgebase. More can be viewed at www.rfidbase.com External Link. Subscribing gives you full access to the case studies, company profiles and their contact details. You can search by many parameters such as system frequency, company, payback, country, tag shape and much more. The knowledgebase now contains company profiles and links to relevant company presentations given at IDTechEx conferences.

The case studies presented in this report detail some of the many benefits of RFID with examples from the retail, logistics, healthcare and manufacturing sectors. They are just a small part of the constantly updated IDTechEx RFID Knowledgebase covering over 1,500 case studies involving over 1,620 companies in 13 applicational sectors.

Global coverage

The studies come from across the world - there is no one country in the lead on all aspects of RFID implementation, although the US is currently doing more than most. The case studies on the Knowledgebase cover dozens of countries with the UK, Japan, China and Germany all featuring in the top ten.

Considerable detail

The variety of case studies in this Knowledgebase is a salutary reminder that, although the supply chain is seen as ultimately the biggest application for RFID, the less hyped applications such as Libraries & Archiving, Passenger & Personal Transportation, and Healthcare, are moving ahead extremely rapidly. Although there are only a few examples of RFID being used in laundries, we understand that over 70 million tags have now been delivered worldwide for this application alone. Libraries have seen about 35 million tags delivered but other forms of archiving raise the figure appreciably. Retail is important, but it mostly consists of trials. Leisure applications are more important than the press gives credit.

Why buy the Knowledgebase?

The RFID Knowledgebase is an online searchable database of case studies and company profiles, created and maintained by IDTechEx and its associates. IDTechEx consultants travel extensively to continually refresh and add new case studies to the Knowledgebase. We have created an extensive, constantly updated database of case studies, many of which have never been published before.

Benefits include:

  • Searchable online database
  • At-a-glance matrix table of essential information
  • Comprehensive descriptions of RFID applications
  • Further information sources
  • Links to presentations given by the companies on their case studies, and relevant white papers and web links

Each case study starts with a summary matrix table of the key parameters including location, companies involved, technologies used (tag type, frequency, etc.) and major benefits. This is followed by a comprehensive written text discussing the project including both negative and positive outcomes and giving expert interpretation and criticism of the data because spreadsheets of numbers cannot properly explain the subtleties of what is being attempted and achieved.

  • Retail/CPG
  • Land and sea logistics
  • Airlines and airports
  • Healthcare
  • Animals and farming
  • Libraries and archiving
  • Manufacturing
  • Leisure
  • Laundry
  • Financial and security
  • Military
  • Passenger transport
  • Communications

Long term potential

The long term potential for RFID is enormous and some of the largest numbers are promised in retail and its supply chains as shown in the figure below. It may take until 2015 for RFID tags to be on ten per cent of CPGs and until 2020 for RFID to be on all of them but that still leaves very large potential even in the short term.
