Dr Jack Howley Alumni

Dr Jack Howley is a Senior Technology Analyst supporting the company's research across sensor technology, advanced materials and critical minerals. At IDTechEx, Jack has authored reports on the global sensor market, critical material recovery, printed and flexible electronics and membrane material markets. Jack holds a PhD from the University of Oxford, with prior experience in the mining industry and university technology transfer.

Jack received his PhD in Inorganic Chemistry for Future Manufacturing from the University of Oxford, where his work focused on the development of indium phosphide quantum dots with applications in displays, sensing, and biological imaging. During this time, Jack also worked at Oxford University Innovation, supporting the commercialization of university technology across the physical and life sciences, in areas including gas sensing, deep brain stimulation, and bioanalysis platforms.

 

Jack obtained his MChem degree (Master of Chemistry) at the University of Edinburgh. During this time, he worked at Solvay (previously Cytec Industries) within the Mining Solutions business unit. His work focused on mineral beneficiation and toxic metal removal from phosphate rock. Jack has co-authored a paper in a peer-reviewed journal and presented his work at multiple international conference events.

Jack's research can be segmented into three overarching themes: sensor technologies, advanced materials, and critical minerals. Jack has authored research on printed and flexible sensors, internet-of-things (IoT) sensors, and emerging edge sensing technologies. Jack's research also encompasses advanced materials topics, such as ion exchange membranes and high-performance rare earth magnets. Finally, Jack leads IDTechEx's research in critical minerals and materials, including supply, demand, and recycling of rare earths, Li-ion battery metals, semiconductors, and platinum group metals.

 

Jack frequently shares IDTechEx's research at international conferences and exhibitions. Jack also supports customers' research needs directly through briefings and technical seminars, delivering these in person to customers across the US, Europe, and Japan. Jack's research has been featured in high impact news publications, including The Economist.
