Sun in a box would store renewable energy for the grid

Engineers have come up with a conceptual design for a system to store renewable energy, such as solar and wind power, and deliver that energy back into an electric grid on demand. The system may be designed to power a small city not just when the sun is up or the wind is high, but around the clock.

A new CO2 - negative energy source as an alternative to coal and oil

Using an existing, operational plant in Austria, NextFuel is introducing a completely new solution to climate change that is CO2 negative, cheap and massively scalable. The NextFuel briquette, made from fast growing elephant grass on marginal land, favorably competes with the rising cost of oil and the price of coal in most markets.

Industrialization of bipolar batteries with Lithium-ion technology

Better batteries for a greater range of electric vehicles - this is the goal of the "EMBATT-goes-FAB" project sponsored by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. For that reason, the four project partners thyssenkrupp System Engineering GmbH, IAV GmbH, Daimler AG and the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems IKTS are developing bipolar batteries and processes for their fabrication.

Successful second round of experiments with Wendelstein 7-X

The goal of fusion research is to develop a climate- and environment-friendly power station. Like the sun, it is to derive energy from the fusion of atomic nuclei. Since the fusion fire only ignites at temperatures of over 100 million degrees, the fuel - a low-density hydrogen plasma - must not come into contact with cold vessel walls. Held by magnetic fields, it floats in an almost contact-free manner in the interior of a vacuum chamber.
