Navigating Emerging Trends for the Economic Development of Second-Life EV Batteries

IDTechEx forecasts that by 2035, the second-life electric vehicle (EV) battery market will be valued at US$4.2B.

Giving EV batteries a second life maximizes their value, extends their lifetime before recycling, and contributes to a circular battery economy. However, first-life Li-ion battery energy storage system (BESS) prices have continued to reduce, which has made it increasingly difficult for repurposers to offer their second-life BESS technologies at cost competitive prices. Moreover, the lack of policies to incentivize the development of second-life EV battery technologies, and high costs of repurposing have led to only steady market growth in recent years across Europe and the US.

With the limited volume of retired EV batteries currently available, repurposers have primarily manufactured second-life EV battery storage technologies for commercial and industrial (C&I) customers, who may be using them for optimization of renewable energy self-consumption, peak shaving, and EV charging. While the availability of retired EV batteries is a crucial factor for enabling future second-life EV battery market growth, repurposers will also have to take advantage of emerging technologies and trends across EV, battery, and advanced battery testing markets to bring their costs of repurposing down.

This webinar, presented by Senior Technology Analyst Conrad Nichols, provides a comprehensive overview of the second-life EV battery market. This webinar provides key insights in second-life EV battery technologies, applications, regional activity, and trends that will influence the economic development of second-life EV batteries in the future. This webinar draws upon research from IDTechEx's new report, "Second-life Electric Vehicle Batteries 2025-2035: Markets, Forecasts, Players, and Technologies".
