VegSense Makes Sense for Forest Studies
Ecologists won't always need expensive and bulky equipment to measure vegetation in the wild. Scientists have discovered a modern heads-up display works pretty well. Researchers set up a Microsoft HoloLens as a mixed-reality sensor to feed VegSense, their application to measure understory vegetation, plant life that grows between the forest canopy and floor.

CrossBoundary Energy Raises Funds for African Solar Powered Mini-Grids
Africa's first project financing facility for mini-grids, CrossBoundary Energy Access, announced $25 million in new funding commitments from ARCH Emerging Markets Partners Limited, Bank of America, and Microsoft Climate Innovation Fund. This investment will leverage an additional $25 million to deploy $50 million of capital into CBEA's near-term pipeline of solar powered mini-grids.

California's Largest Renewable Microgrid for Microsoft Data Centre
With ambitious goals of becoming carbon negative by 2030, Microsoft chose Enchanted Rock for its ability to develop a reliable microgrid with net-zero emissions. The project will out-perform current California Air Resources Board emissions requirements for distributed generation, the most stringent in the world, with hourly local emissions 80%-96% lower than Tier 4 diesel standards while delivering higher reliability.

Volocopter Collaborates with Microsoft on VoloIQ Aerospace Cloud
Volocopter announced a strategic collaboration with Microsoft to develop an aerospace cloud system in Microsoft Azure that will address the nascent cloud computing requirements for eVTOLs, UAM, and autonomous aviation. Once primed for commercial use, Azure will support the digital platform VoloIQ, the operating system for Volocopter's UAM services, and its subsequent transition to autonomous operations.

SATAVIA Provides Contrail Prevention Capability for KLM
Aircraft-generated condensation trails, or contrails, cause surface warming amounting to two-thirds of aviation's climate impact, almost double that of direct CO2 emissions from aircraft engines. Until recently, technical challenges made contrail prevention difficult or impossible, but SATAVIA's best-in-class atmospheric modelling now enables flight plan optimisation for contrail prevention.
