SID Display Week 2023: Rise of LFDs and CGH in the Display Industry

The display industry is dominated by two-dimensional displays from thin-film-transistor liquid-crystal displays (TFT-LCDs) and OLEDs to more recently microLEDs. While these technologies are growing and make up a significant portion of the market, there are fringe technologies that deliver true three-dimensional images. These are light field displays (LFDs) and computer-generated holography (CGH). These have been gaining interest for certain applications and while they do not compete with other 2D technologies at the moment, this premium article offers an analysis on how these devices are evolving and how they are positioning themselves to compete in the future.
