Psionic
Psionic offer lidar modules for space and defence, and are developing lidar modules for ADAS. Psionic are a spin-out from NASA and many of its core team previously worked at NASA. Psionic's Doppler lidar technology was developed by NASA for autonomous space vehicles. Psionic are optimising this technology for automotive applications.

NASA looks to 3D printing to improve aircraft icing research tools
NASA's aeronautical innovators are using the most modern research tools available, including 3D printing, to generate new data that will help airplane makers and operators more efficiently deal with one of aviation's oldest safety challenges - namely, icing.

Self-folding "Rollbot" paves the way for fully untethered soft robots
The majority of soft robots today rely on external power and control, keeping them tethered to off-board systems or rigged with hard components. Now, researchers have developed soft robotic systems, inspired by origami, that can move and change shape in response to external stimuli, paving the way for fully untethered soft robots.

A battery-free sensor for underwater exploration
To investigate the vastly unexplored oceans covering most our planet, researchers aim to build a submerged network of interconnected sensors that send data to the surface — an underwater "internet of things." But how to supply constant power to scores of sensors designed to stay for long durations in the ocean's deep?

NASA's Mars 2020 Rover does bicep curls
The robotic arm on NASA's Mars 2020 rover does not have deltoids, triceps or biceps, but it can still curl heavy weights with the best.

50 years on since the moon landing - VARTA batteries were on board
50 years on since the first moon landing, VARTA too is marking an anniversary: batteries from Ellwangen-based battery manufacturer VARTA were on board with the crew. Photos of the first moon landing 50 years ago were captured using a camera equipped with VARTA batteries.

For climbing robots, the sky's the limit
Robots can drive on the plains and craters of Mars, but what if we could explore cliffs, polar caps and other hard-to-reach places on the Red Planet and beyond?

Deep-CEE: The AI tool helping astronomers explore deep space
Galaxy clusters are some of the most massive structures in the cosmos, but despite being millions of lightyears across, they can still be hard to spot. Researchers have turned to artificial intelligence for assistance, developing "Deep-CEE" (Deep Learning for Galaxy Cluster Extraction and Evaluation), a novel deep learning technique to speed up the process of finding them.

NASA's Mars 2020 Rover's 7-foot-long robotic arm installed
The main arm includes five electrical motors and five joints. Measuring 2.1 meters long, the arm will allow the rover to work as a human geologist would: by holding and using science tools with its turret, which is essentially its "hand."

Fuel cell EVs fit in where?
Time was when fuel cells were to be in every bike then every motorbike then they were pushed back to ever larger vehicles. The IDTechEx take is that fuel cells are most likely to find their place where batteries cannot give the range and where few of the expensive charging station systems are needed meaning fleets and trains.

Crawling robots, drones detect damage to save wind blades
Drones and crawling robots outfitted with special scanning technology could help wind blades stay in service longer, which may help lower the cost of wind energy at a time when blades are getting bigger, pricier and harder to transport, researchers say.

Small Electric Aircraft Bring the Future of Aviation
It is easy to say that, although small electric aircraft are at last selling, they are a negligible part of the overall aircraft market. Mistake. They will work up from the bottom to be mainstream. Airbus, Boeing and Rolls Royce know this, but many others are sleeping through the future. Some of the successes are from small companies.

Holes in Antarctic sea ice explained by years of robotic data
A new study combines satellite images of the sea ice cover, robotic drifters and even seals outfitted with sensors to better understand the phenomenon. The research explores why this hole appears in only some years, and what role it could play in the larger ocean circulation.
