A new device that may be capable of pumping human waste into the 'engine room' of a self-sustaining robot has been created by a group of researchers.

When the soft robots move in an environment, they undergo large elastic deformations and collide with the surrounding surfaces. Thus they are going to absorb a lot of elastic energy that would otherwise be wasted.
