SES AI Corporation, formerly known as SolidEnergy Systems, was founded in 2012 as a spin-out from MIT by Dr. Qichao Hu, with incubation support from A123 Systems. The company initially focused on solid-state Li-metal batteries but soon recognized the limitations in scaling such technology for practical manufacturing. By 2013, SES had developed early prototypes of multi-layer cells.
