Applications of Printed Electrochromics - Improving The Communications Potential Of Smart Objects And Surfaces (Printed Electronics Europe 2019)

The growing number of daily human interactions with smart objects and smart environments is increasing demand for more practical display solutions. This presentation introduces printed electrochromics (ECs) as a means to increase the communications potential of smart objects at the cross section of the digital and the physical worlds.

 

Electrochromics is a non-light emitting technology so far used mainly for dimming in smart windows and mirrors. With a minute electrical stimulus electrochromic materials and devices can interactively change their color and opacity. With advances in the area of organic and printed electronics, electrochromic device can now be processed on films using conventional printing and converting processes, with production taking place in conventional print house conditions. EC inks can be used to print interactive printed graphics, i.e. ultra-low power color changing displays and surfaces for smart objects, IoT devices and ambient intelligence. In the talk we look at applications of the technology, and how to get started with the technology.

Jani-Mikael Kuusisto is the CEO of Ynvisible Interactive Inc. He has extensive international experience with printed electronics customer and supply value chains - particularly relating to consumer packaged goods. Prior to Ynvisible, Jani-Mikael was business development manager at VTT, heading its printed intelligence commercialization program. 2002-2007 he was responsible for printed electronics business development at Metso Corporation and its spin-out Avantone Oy. Jani-Mikael received his MSc in Economics and Business Administration from the Helsinki School of Economics.
