Presentation Summary

  • Roll-to-Roll (R2R) production of thin film based display components (e.g. active matrix TFT backplanes & touch screens) combines the advantages of the use of inexpensive, lightweight & flexible substrates with high throughput production.
  • Recently, significant advances have been made in device patterning enabling the mass production of a variety of flexible electronic devices. These techniques are now so advanced that feature sizes of less than 40 nm can be produced on thin film layer stacks deposited on 50 µm thick polymeric substrates.
  • High performance R2R manufactured TFT devices have been demonstrated using both traditional amorphous silicon & IGZO channel materials indicating the readiness of the technology for the next generation of low cost, low resolution display devices for EPD devices (E-Readers, Digital Signage etc).
  • High oxygen and water barrier technologies are also required for commercialization of today's high end, organic electronics based consumer devices. R2R CVD technologies, today offer a route towards economic production of barrier layer stack structures with performance levels necessary for OPV device encapsulation. Further developments are required to provide the performance gains necessary for OLED display applications.
