Chile - labelling and biosafety
2005 10월7일
The Chilean government is completing a draft Biosafety Bill, which includes a special segment on labelling of GMO products, said Gonzalo Herrera, executive secretary of the technological innovation programme in the country's economy ministry. This new law will comprehensively deal with issues such as biotechnological research, commercial applications of the technology, and regulatory aspects.
Herrera declared that the technical work on the bill has ended and the bill has been forwarded to the economy, agriculture and health sub-secretariats, as well as to the general secretariat of the Presidency for a final verdict.
Complex process
Herrera commented, "This work that ongoing is much more comprehensive than a simple GMO labelling law. We are talking about a law that will regulate activities involving transgenic organisms, and labelling is only one aspect of the entire process."
