IDTechEx estimates that production capacity for silicon anode materials is due to expand by 6.5x from 2024 to 2030. Silicon anodes have long promised a step-wise improvement to the energy density of Li-ion batteries but have been hindered by the expansion of silicon under cycling, which has ultimately led to prohibitively poor cycle life. In addition to other challenges, this has limited the use of silicon to use as an additive in graphite-based anodes. However, technology innovation and billions of total investment, into start-ups and from established materials companies, means excitement in the silicon anode market is growing. Solutions that enable the use of silicon at higher weight percentages, and the improvements to energy density and fast charge capability this can bring, are starting to make their way onto the market.
