CRISPR catches out critical cancer changes
In the first large-scale analysis of cancer gene fusions, which result from the merging of two previously separate genes, researchers at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, EMBL-EBI, Open Targets, GSK and their collaborators have used CRISPR to uncover which gene fusions are critical for the growth of cancer cells. The team also identified a new gene fusion that presents a novel drug target for multiple cancers, including brain and ovarian cancers.

Learn about the route to success in the unforgiving EV battleground
Plug-in electric cars are forecast by IDTechEx to sell over 25 million units per year in 2029 making up around 30% of total sales by that point. However, electrification does not stop at cars; buses, trucks, construction, mining, two-wheelers, boats, aircraft, and more are all progressing towards electric drive. This combined market shift makes the technologies enabling this transformation a key battleground with plenty to win and lose.

How the snail's shell got its coil
Successfully applying CRISPR gene editing technology to molluscs for the first time, researchers have now made snails with mutations in a gene called Lsdia1, which had previously been suggested - but not conclusively proven - to be involved in snail shell coiling; snails without a functional copy of Lsdia1 produce offspring with shells that coil to the left, showing that this single gene is responsible for rightwardcoiling.
