Plessey Semiconductors

Plessey is a UK-based working on MicroLEDs based on GaN-on-silicon technology. Plessey operates 150 mm and 200 mm wafer processing facilities to undertake design, test and assembly of products. The company provides illuminators for display engines (Digital Micro-mirror Device DMD and LCOS) and full-field emissive microLED displays that combine very high density RGB pixel arrays with high-performance in-house developed CMOS backplanes to produce high brightness, low power and high frame rate image sources for head mounted displays (HMDs), Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) systems.

PlayNitride

The Taiwan-based company PlayNitride Inc. was founded in 2014. The company's initial know-how was mainly in LEDs but gradually expands its coverage. The company does not only covers PixeLED® Display Technology based on MicroLED, but also UVolution Solution by UV LED, and PlayBeacon Package by iBeacon. In the µLED display area, PlayNitride integrates µLED epitaxy, chip fabrication and mass transfer, which is advantageous compared to companies who only focuses on mass transfer technologies. When the company was founded, there was about 70 people in the team. The number has expanded to more than 100 in 2019.

Mikro Mesa

Mikro Mesa Technology, a company based in Taiwan, was founded by Dr. Li-Yi Chen, the ex- vice executive president of CSOT in 2014.

LUMENS

Lumens, established in 2004 in South Korea, is a company working on new LED technology such as micro-LEDs, ultraviolet LEDs, LED package, LED module lighting finished products, LEDs for back light unit IT products for TVs and monitors, as well as automotive lighting.

LG Display

LG also had efforts in the micro-LED display area

Kyocera Inc.

Kyocera showed a transparent 1.8" µLED display (0.7 mm thick) with 256 X 256 RGB dots and 200 PPI resolution at CEATEC 2019. The active area spans 32.5 X 32.5 mm.

HongKong Beida Jade Bird Display Ltd.

Jade Bird Display (JBD) is a start-up founded in 2015 and headquartered in Hong Kong. Its core technology is the monochromatic micro-displays, enabled by wafer-level mass manufacturable approach of monolithic hybrid integration of µLED arrays on Si ICs.

Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI)

ITRI's display group, the Electronic and Optoelectronic System Research Laboratories (EOSRL) is working on µLED displays. ITRI/EOSRL has been collaborating with LED driver design company Macroblock, PlayNitride and Mikro Mesa Technology. The mass production will be done by Macroblock, which is expected to happen in 2020.

GLO

Glō established in 2010 in Sweden, is a fabless company based on research performed at Lund University. Glō then moved to Silicon Valley in 2012.

EpiPix

EpiPix is a spin-out from University of Sheffield in the UK on January 31, 2020. The company develops and commercialize micro-LED technology for AR/VR devices, 3D sensing and LiFi.

CEA-LETI

CEA is a French government-funded technological research organisation in four main areas: low-carbon energies, defence and security, information technologies and health technologies. CEA Tech is the technology research branch of the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), a player in research, development and innovation in defence & security, nuclear energy, technological research for industry and fundamental physical and life sciences. Leti is a technology research institute at CEA Tech.

AU Optronics

AUO showcased the world's highest resolution and full colour LTPS TFT driven 8" Micro-LED display at Display Week 2018.

Aoto Electronics

AOTO Electronics Co., Ltd. ("AOTO") has 4 key strategic business units including high quality LED display, banking electronics, lighting engineering and sports operation. It was also the first publicly held company in the LED display industry in China (Shenzhen Stock Exchange: 002587).

ALLOS Semiconductors

ALLOS Semiconductors GmbH is a German fabless IP licensing and technology company focusing on GaN-on-Silicon technology, which is based on the track record at University Magdeburg, AZZURRO and ALLOS.

Aledia

Founded in 2011, Aledia is a spin-off company from CEA-LETI which develops an innovative LED technology based on a 3D architecture using GaN-on-silicon microwires (platform 3D) based on the colour converted approach.
