Advantages include reduced material use, higher energy density, and compatibility with existing facilities. Backed by US$100M+ funding (including from Japan's GPSC), it leverages MIT-derived IP. Challenges include scaling production and competing with entrenched lithium-ion giants (CATL, Panasonic). Positioned as a cost-innovation leader, 24M's semi-solid approach bridges traditional and next-generation solid-state technology but faces execution risks in a capital-intensive industry.

Blue Current, founded in 2014, emerged from the U.S. Department of Energy's Joint Center for Energy Storage Research with a mission to create safer batteries. Initially focused on safety, the company pivoted in 2016 to develop solid-state composite electrolytes, and by 2018, it introduced a fully dry solid-state battery featuring a high-silicon anode, known as the "silicon elastic composite" battery. Headquartered in Hayward, California, Blue Current expanded its operations in 2019 with a 22,000-square-foot facility and secured over US$30 million in funding by 2022. Multilayer cell demonstrations and pilot-scale production happened in 2023 and 2024. Blue Current works on solving four primary challenges of solid-state batteries: safety, pressure, temperature, and scalability.
