After decades of promise and hype, advanced nanocarbons such as graphene and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are beginning to show signs of achieving commercial success. CNTs have found a killer application in lithium-ion batteries as conductive additives - with major expansions in manufacturing capacity underway to meet growing demand. IDTechEx expects that over the next decade, demand from the energy storage sector will drive the commercialization of CNTs, with the evolving supply chain enabling opportunities in industries beyond energy storage.

 

The outlook is not so straightforward for graphene, celebrating its 20th birthday in 2024. The search for a killer application continues, with diverse and varied potential applications, all leveraging different properties of graphene, from enhanced conductivity to mechanical reinforcement. While some legacy players have fallen, profitable graphene companies are emerging as product launches continue.
