A revolution in the human machine interface (HMI) in automotive is coming as displays and sensors evolve significantly beyond the instrument panel and the center console. Potentially any curved or shaped surface in the car interior can now become an active display, image sensor or both. With the fundamental technologies in place, the race is already on to use them to build compelling user value in automotive car interiors in the near future.
This presentation will review the development status of some of these key technologies with a focus on conformable displays and sensors enabled by organic electronics. The particular example of organic LCD (OLCD) will be highlighted as a way to re-purpose a display technology (LCD) that is already qualified for automotive and that can be manufactured using existing factory capacity. Not only is OLCD the lowest cost flexible display technology, it also enables ultra-bright displays for viewing in daylight conditions.

FlexEnable has developed the world's first flexible electronics technology platform that allows electronics made of organic materials to be manufactured on flexible plastic film, the thickness of a sheet of paper. Compatible with existing display manufacturing lines, it is the key to truly flexible and cost effective electronics over large and small surfaces. The core applications of this technology are glass-free, flexible displays and sensors that enable game-changing products across a variety of industries including consumer electronics, automotive, digital signage, wearables, medical and security. www.flexenable.com
