Carbon and Fast Radius Expand Strategic Partnership

Dr Bryony Core caught up with Carbon at Formnext 2019. Carbon are a 3D printer startup who developed the CLIP process for curing photosensitive resins. They have recently announced a large format printer.

First digitally printed lattice bike saddle

Partnership to produce the first digitally printed bike saddle, designed to improve rider comfort and performance, the new saddle, crafted using Carbon materials and complex lattice geometries, absorbs impact and improves stability, which can reduce the chance of injury for the rider.

Synthetic biology: biomanufacturing meat without animals

Biomanufacturing meat without animals, chemicals without oil and silk without spiders. Synthetic biology can broadly be described as the engineering of biological systems, having been the focus of intense academic research from the early 2000s. Following these early steps, genetic engineering has become increasingly sophisticated, allowing microorganisms to be engineered to produce specific target compounds, known as biomanufacturing.

2017

$200 million in funding for global digital 3D manufacturing

Carbon announced the first closing in a total raise of $200 million in Series D funding. Delivering a true, scalable digital 3D Manufacturing platform for polymeric products, the company will use the additional capital to accelerate its momentum in disrupting traditional analog injection molding production techniques with connected, software-first, digitally-enabled design and fabrication capabilities.

Pushing the limits of athletic performance

Researchers have designed an energy-harvesting shoe to convert each stride into power. Air bladders embedded in the sole of the shoe convert the foot's impact into airflow along the runner's gait.

Adidas shapes 4D shoe soles using light and heat

Through adidas's obsession with helping athletes make a difference, the brand unveils Futurecraft 4D, the world's first high performance footwear featuring midsoles crafted with light and oxygen using Digital Light Synthesis, a technology pioneered by Carbon.
