Safety of Sodium-Ion Batteries

Despite the frequent assertion that sodium-ion batteries are safer than lithium-ion batteries, there is currently very little information on the potential safety issues associated with sodium-ion batteries. While sodium-ion battery research is catching up, their safety advantages lie in their stable behaviour at 0% SoC, slower thermal runaway events, and reduced risk of cell-to-cell propagation. However, challenges persist with flammable electrolytes, dendrite formation, and cathode instability. This premium article dives into the risks associated with sodium-ion batteries, their countermeasures, and safety testing results.
