Legacy communication systems, coupled with emerging EPC RFID implementations, provides the communications infrastructure that can be leveraged with advanced RFID tag designs. This presentation describes the vision of more data rich and intelligent RFID devices, multimode tags capable of communicating in various modes depending on the infrastructure present or power available to the tag. Speaker BioMark McDonald, Director Program Management of Research & Development at Alien Technology has been with the company for four years. He began his career at Alien as Director, System Electronics for Displays and later moved to the position of Product Manager for the Battery Assisted Passive (BAP) Product line. Prior to joining Alien, he was at Candescent Technologies where he was Manager of Applications Engineering, responsible for customer technical and product integration support, technical marketing support, competitive analysis, product concept and demonstration vehicle design and construction. Previously, McDonald was Regional Applications Manager for the Eastern Region as well as a Field Technical Manager specializing in flat panels for Sharp Electronics. Earlier, he held various technical positions at IBM and Motorola. McDonald has almost twenty years experience in electronic design, applications engineering, and applications engineering management. He has three issued patents and holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of South Florida.
