Presentation Summary

Manufacturing Printed Electronics Using Graphic Arts Printing Technologies

Products such as smart cards, item level RFID tags, flexible displays drivers, low cost sensors, personal-area and body-area networks are cost sensitive products that require disruptive to enable them. The printed electronic technology using high-throughput, low cost manufacturing processes will enable the market introduction of low cost electronic products driven by printed semiconductor circuitry. In this study, we investigated the use of graphic arts printing technologies, contact and non-contact printing platforms, to fabricate printed transistors in a non-clean room manufacturing environment without the use of vacuum processes. The materials and transistor designs were based on graphic arts printing requirements. The functional transistors and circuitry were fabricated that showed tight electrical performance tolerance.

Speaker CV

Dr. Jie Zhang is a Principal Staff Engineer at Motorola. She joined Motorola in 1996. She developed and qualified novel material systems, and developed and optimized assembly processes for advanced DCA packages for Motorola cellular and semiconductor products. She led the technical efforts to evaluate and characterize several data-driven materials deposition systems, and developed advanced materials for fast prototyping and flexible manufacturing technologies. Currently, she is leading the material characterization, printing technology assessment, printing processing development, and device fabrication efforts for printing electronics at Motorola. Jie has authored/co-authored over 30 journal and conference papers and one book chapter. She co-edited Printed Organic and Molecular Electronics book, published by Kluwer Academic Publisher. She co-organized the 1st and 2nd, and 3rd Printing an Intelligent Future advanced technology workshops in 2002 and 2003, and 2004, sponsored by IMAPS. Jie is a co-inventor of five U.S. patents, 10 patents pending in printing electronic space.
