Dr Sorin G Stan, Program Manager Technology & Business Development
VDL Enabling Technologies Group, The Netherlands
Manufacturing electronic components by thin-film deposition techniques on flexible substrates has challenged the engineers in various technical domains for quite some time now. Both sheet-to-sheet (S2S) and roll-to-roll (R2R) production technologies are being used, but the latter offer clear advantages in terms of throughput and cost of ownership. The tremendous progress made during the recent years in R2R production equipment has led already to significant growth in the market of several flexible electronic components. More simple devices like sensors can be "printed" already on plastic foils at sufficiently low prices, but printing and coating the functional layers of more complex devices like organic photovoltaics (OPV), flexible perovskite solar cells, thin-film batteries or flexible displays require advanced equipment. This presentation addresses novel R2R production concepts suitable for the manufacturing of "printed electronics" at high yields and low cost of ownership. New sheet-to-sheet (S2S) manufacturing concepts are also addressed.
