Polycarbonate glazing contributes to reduced EV battery load for propulsion due to its lower weight and for HVAC due to its lower thermal conductivity, both compared to glass. Results are presented for CFD simulation of the benefits of polycarbonate glazing for HVAC load, electric range, battery lifetime and inside glazing temperature. Scenarios include hot and cold seasons, and moving and stationary vehicles. In both seasons, inside glazing temperature is closer to cabin air temperature for polycarbonate than for glass, which supports occupant comfort and reduced fogging. These benefits of polycarbonate glazing's reduced thermal conductivity are independent of its weight benefit.
Speaker Biography (Matteo Terragni)
Matteo is the senior business manager for the glazing segment at SABIC. The company ranks among the world's largest petrochemical manufacturers and holds a leadership position in polycarbonate glazing solutions.
In this role, Matteo is responsible for glazing marketing strategy, business development and support of OEMs and Tiers.
He has more 15 years of experience in the use of thermoplastic and thermoset materials for automotive applications.
Before joining SABIC in March 2010, Matteo performed in key roles for Ranger S.p.A, a Tier 1 supplier for automotive exteriors and under-the-hood components. He served first as the company's R&D/Marketing director and later as its Commercial director. He also worked for Borealis as an application marketing manager in automotive exteriors.
Matteo holds a doctorate degree in chemistry from the University of Milan.
