Presentation Summary

The Internet of Things (IoT) era is upon us and there is certainly a lot of anticipation and excitement on what value added services the combination of connectivity, device intelligence and cloud access can bring to the consumer. One of the key enablers in the IoT market is the sensor devices used to collect and monitor data remotely via the cloud. Vision based systems now offer internet security services, and heart rate monitoring and other medical oriented sensing are becoming health and fitness aids.

There is a vast amount of data we, as humans, sense - Touch, Sight, Taste, Smell, and Hearing - can be captured via a slew of electronic devices such as: capacitive touch pads, cameras, gyros and accelerometers. These devices take analog inputs and convert them into digital signals so that they can be transported via some communication protocol and then processed in a gateway/collector device or in the cloud. The whole process of collecting, converting, transporting and processing requires more intelligence and computing capability, hence the integration of more 32-bit CPUs in the sensor devices. CPU cores are driving sensor fusion to enable all this little data to become the big data that life enhancing and business optimization opportunities will be built upon.
