Air quality impacts the health of billions of people worldwide and claims millions in early deaths every year. The first requirement to understand and/or control something is to be able to measure it. In order to make practical measurements of air quality today one must carry a lot of expensive instrumentation. But, we have developed a new line of printed electrochemical sensors and have improved them so that ppb-level measurements of the primary stressors in urban atmospheres - CO, O3, NO2, SO2 - as well as overall air quality is possible. Adding T, P, RH and total oxidizing and total reducing gases in the air are also possible in a low cost portable and even wearable package. Printed sensors revolutionize our capability by presenting a new paradigm of low cost manufacture that enables us to reach the high volume required with low cost for distributed sensing applications. Our new progress include multi-gas modules with "smart" software for high resolution on a single platform as well as in field demonstrations of distributed sensing for wearables, smart cities, and consumer product medical devices.
Speaker Biography (Joseph Stetter)
Joe received a Ph.D in Physical Chemistry from the University at Buffalo (SUNY) in 1975 and for more than 40 years, has been at the forefront of chemical sensor and associated technology as a leading researcher, entrepreneur, author, and educator. In his early career, Dr. Stetter developed patented electrochemical sensors, the first operational sensor-array based instrument (electronic nose), and the first electrochemical dosimeters for gas detection. Products he championed for personal protection and environmental monitoring saved lives, improved worker health, and promoted the well-being of people and the planet. As Professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Dr. Stetter taught both chemistry and entrepreneurship, while advancing the applications of nanotechnology in gas detection. Dr. Stetter has founded several technology-based sensor companies, received numerous awards for his work, and published hundreds of scientific papers. With over 50 patents, his work is the foundation of many sensor and gas detection products with some in for more than 25 years. At KWJ Engineering Inc. and with the founding of Spec Sensors, LLC, Dr. Stetter not only continues to innovate and develop products for the social good, but also mentors a new generation of engineers and scientists.
