Presentation Summary

Driven by the demand to reduce weight and cost, structural electronics is an emerging discipline that is challenging the highly-entrenched role of the printed circuit board. Smart garments and e-textiles can be thought of as a branch of structural electronics in which the garment textile provides the mechanical support and substrate for interconnection. The huge variety of textiles - along with their highly conformal and stretchable nature - means that they are a particularly challenging substrate in terms of interconnects.
This presentation will explore the requirements for interconnect technologies for e-textiles and smart garments - and how these requirements vary in relevance and importance between various types of applications and target industry sectors. This topic will be considered within the context of value chains that are likely to emerge for the design and manufacture of e-textiles and smart garments. The talk will conclude with an overview of Pireta's novel e-textile technology and an assessment of its application and market suitability.

Company Profile (Pireta Ltd)

Pireta Ltd logo
Pireta has developed a unique free-form process to add durable, conductive, metallic patterns to textiles without changing the fabric feel or performance. Unlike printed conductive inks, Pireta technology has no impact on the handle, drape, stretchability or breathability of the fabric. By allowing electronic systems to be assembled and interconnected directly onto a wide range of fabrics, Pireta technology is enabling a new generation of truly wearable smart garments and e-textiles.
