Presentation Summary

Today's eye movement detection technology makes use of high-resolution cameras embedded in eye-tracking screens or glasses. While camera-based solutions can accurately determine where users are looking, most cameras' frame rates are not fast enough to match the eye's most rapid movements. Imec's solution, based on electrical sensing, offers an accurate and inexpensive alternative, while solving the issue of the image processing delay.
Imec's EOG sensors were integrated into a set of glasses, with four built-in electrodes around each lens, two to pick up the eye's vertical movement and two for horizontal movements. An advanced algorithm was developed to translate the signals into a concrete position, based on the angle the eye is making with its central point of vision. This solution is currently being tested and shows promising results on eye behavior and blink detection in various applications.

Speaker Biography (Arye Lipman)

Mr. Lipman is a Strategic Alliances Manager at Imec, a Belgian nanoelectronics R&D institute. Prior to joining Imec, he worked as a consultant, most recently for inVentiv Health, covering technology development and commercialization, with a focus on medical devices and imaging. He previously worked for several biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. He currently serves as a business advisor for technology start-ups and accelerator programs in Southern California. Mr. Lipman holds degrees in Molecular Biology and Immunology from UCLA, and is based in Los Angeles.
