Coherent: InP for Photonic Applications.

Coherent Corp, (formerly II-VI Incorporated) is a major American producer of optical components, with a strong portfolio in laser technology for photonics and datacom. In fiscal year 2025, Coherent generated over $5.8 billion USD in revenues. Coherent has recently transitioned from 4" to 6" indium phosphide (InP) wafers - an industry first. It has also reportedly validated ultra-high powered (UHP) laser technologies for co-packaged optics (CPO). Coherent is also pursuing VCSEL's for use at 200G/lane applications. In this profile IDTechEx assesses these breakthroughs in the context of the wider datacom, AI, and photonics markets.

The Packaging Technologies Behind NVIDIA's 3D-Stacked CPO

At GTC 2025, NVIDIA announced two new networking switch platforms - Spectrum-X Photonics and Quantum-X Photonics - based on Co-Packaged Optics (CPO) technology. Both platforms incorporate TSMC's 3D hybrid bonding technology for its CPO, and these will be the world's first 3D-stacked silicon photonics engine.

Ayar Labs: AI Accelerator Interconnect

Ayar Labs is a San Jose-based startup working on an optical I/O connectivity solution that offers high bandwidth, low-power, low-latency connections, using photonic integrated circuits (PICs) and electrical integrated circuits (EICs) on a monolithic chiplet. Rockley Photonics

Rockley Photonics are developing silicon photonic chips and lidar modules. Rockley's founder previously founded Bookham, which later established itself as Oclaro and were acquired by Lumentum (USA).

TriLumina

TriLumina offer VCSEL arrays for lidar. IDTechEx interviewed Mr Luke Smithwick from TriLumina in May 2019. Smithwick is the Chief Marketing Officer of TriLumina, and is based in USA.

SiLC

SiLC Technologies offer lidar modules and vision chips based on silicon photonics. IDTechEx interviewed Dr Mehdi Asghari in May 2019. Asghari is the President and CEO of SiLC.

Convergent Photonics

Convergent are a laser manufacturer who produce fiber, Nd:YAG and CO2 lasers. IDTechEx first had a discussion with Convergent at SPIE Photonics West 2018 in January 2018; this was followed by a full interview in March 2018. The company specializes in multi-kilowatt fiber lasers for material processing applications.
