Company ProfileMerck KGaA or EMD Chemicals, as we are known in the U.S. and Canada, is the world's leading manufacturer of LCD materials. By continuously developing customer-specific liquid crystal mixtures, together with the display manufacturers, we make the communication technologies of tomorrow possible. Thanks to a high level of innovation, creativity and entrepreneurial thinking, Merck KGaA is number one in Liquid Crystals worldwide. We currently hold more than 2500 patents on liquid crystals, their mixtures and display applications. Merck KGaA/EMD Chemicals broadened its display industry market position considerably, when in February, 2005, we announced the acquisition of the Organic Semiconductor business of Avecia and the Covion Organic Light Emitters, followed recently by formation of the Organic Electronics Business and Printing Centre of Excellence in Chilworth Science Park in Southampton, U.K. The purpose of these two groups is to enhance the support that we provide to the emerging Organic Electronics industry and accelerate the commercialization of the ground breaking products that are now under development within the Merck KGaA R&D teams. EMD now offers the first semiconducting ink systems as well as polymer-based diodes that convert power to light. We are involved with US technology leaders in actively driving the development of these emerging fields.
