Direct CVD growth of Graphene on Silicon Carbide (SiC) and Germanium (Ge) (Graphene Europe 2015)

Presentation Summary

We demonstrate the growth of high quality graphene layers by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on insulating and conductive SiC substrates. This method provides key advantages over the well-developed epitaxial graphene growth by Si sublimation that has been known for decades. CVD growth is much less sensitive to SiC surface defects resulting in high electron mobilities of ∼6500 cm2/(V s) and enables the controlled synthesis of a determined number of graphene layers with a defined doping level. Our measurements indicate that CVD grown graphene is under less compressive strain than its epitaxial counterpart and confirms the existence of an electronic energy band gap. These features are essential for future applications of graphene electronics based on wafer scale graphene growth. Additionally as a novelty we present graphene on Ge(100)/Si(100) substrate grown by the CVD method. Uniform and high quality graphene can be subsequently either transferred using the electrical delamination approach or used directly in the fabrication of e.g. graphene THz devices thus opening the way for this new material to get integrated with Si microelectronics.

Krzysztof Zwoliński is World Wide Sales Manager at Nano Carbon sp. z o.o. Involved in nanotechnologies since 2010, when he started do sell Atomic Force Microscopes and nanoindenters from Keysight Technologies (formerly Agilent Technologies). He graduated Electronics at Warsaw University of Technology.
