A multifunctional material system has been designed for building envelope with high performance for energy efficiency and sustainability. It contains photovoltaic (PV) modules laminated on a functionally graded material (FGM) layer containing water pipelines, which is then bonded to a lightweight concrete substrate. The FGM layer with water flow reduces the thermal stress by continuous material transition, recovers the energy efficiency of the PV cells by controlling the service temperature, and harvests heat as well as saves air conditioning for the building. A sedimentation based manufacturing method has been used for the mass production of the FGM. The equivalent inclusion method (EIM) has been introduced in modeling of particles moving in a viscous fluid toward FGM manufacturing. This formulation can be extended to numerical simulation of heterogeneous material systems containing different sizes and shapes of particles, whether a multiphase flow or a heterogeneous solid. For example, applications of the EIM to smart materials and asphalt materials are illustrated. Finally, Dr. Yin will introduce his vision on energy in sustainable infrastructure.
Speaker Biography (Huiming Yin, PhD)
Dr. Huiming Yin received his Bachelor degree from the Hohai University, China, in 1995, Master degree from the Peking University, China, in 1998, and PhD degree from The Iowa University in 2004. Before joining Columbia University in 2008, Dr. Yin was employed by Caltrans as a Civil Engineer in the Transportation Laboratory at Sacramento, California, for two years and by University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering for two years. Dr. Yin's research focuses on the multiphysical and mechanical characterization and modeling of civil engineering materials and their applications in energy efficient infrastructure systems. He serves the Director of the Pao Sustainable Engineering and Materials Laboratory and is the Site Director of Center for Energy Harvesting Materials and Systems at Columbia University sponsored by the NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center Program. He received the NSF CAREER Award in 2010.

Center for Energy Harvesting Materials and Systems (CEHMS) was formed in 2010 by Virginia Tech. In 2017, Columbia University joined in the Phase II of CEHMS as a Site Center. Columbia Site Center is hosted by the Pao Sustainable Engineering and Materials Laboratory. The research effort at the CEHMS site at Columbia is complementary to the efforts performed at Virginia and aims to develop novel materials, structures, and systems for solar, geothermal, and mechanical energy harvesting applications in civil infrastructure.
